I think the biggest transition we see with Dannie is the fact that she finally orders food that is different than her norm. She’s controlling, manipulative, and crosses boundaries with families, friends, and lovers. She’s very unrelatable and unlikable (for me)- not a good girlfriend, fiancé, or friend.

In addition, I was expecting “an unforgettable love story,” but this book took some unexpected turns and it felt like there were loose ends in the plot.Ĭontrary to popular opinion, I do not view Dannie as a strong female lead. As I got into the heart of the book, it felt like there were many loopholes and missing elements from the supporting characters. At the same time, I was disappointed with how rushed some of the characters’ storylines felt. I loved the writing structure of this story the chapters are short and fast paced, and the plot never feels stagnant. Dannie tries to bury herself in work, but everything changes when she comes face to face with that man from her dream. Dannie re-awakens back in her apartment at the brink of midnight. After falling asleep and awakening five years later, she has a different ring on her finger, and spends an hour with a man who is not her current fiancé. She’s landed her dream job and is engaged, and right where she intends to be. The synopsis really grabbed me: the goal driven Dannie has her 5-year plan all figured out. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle was one of my most highly anticipated novels to read this year.
