How the actions of all of the main characters touched the reader was incredibly effective in telling a generous and heartfelt story. Learning about the country, the poverty, the ridiculousness of this war, the pain suffered and lives lost was incredibly interesting and haunting. But this book offers so much more emotion and depth. Some may see this as a retelling of the Miss Saigon, and trust me, I see where those thoughts are coming from. And finally, two sisters known as “bar girls” that are connected to these men, each with their own rich storyline. One man is searching for his father – a Black American officer. This book has a few different POVs all taking place in Vietnam. After huge success from her first book, The Mountains Sing, it’s absolutely amazing that she can land another rich and deeply emotional book. Other institutions fail him as well, including school, where he’s deemed “gifted” only because of his artistic talent.Dust Child by Nguyen Phan Que Mai was another winner in this author’s literary belt. Dad is dead, a story that trickles out in bits and pieces over the course of the novel, and mom is eventually in no shape to parent, so Demon is ejected into a series of foster homes, each only slightly more bearable than the last. “First, I got myself born,” begins the book, as Demon flops around on the bathroom floor of his junkie mom’s trailer, “inside the sack that babies float in,” mom unconscious nearby. Demon’s view of cities from his visit to Knoxville as a child is interesting in its juxtaposition with the stereotypes the reader is presented with about folks living Appalachia.

The voice takes some getting used to, but from the start the title character feels like a reliable narrator, telling it very much like it was. If you’re familiar with the Charles Dickens classic, you’ll follow the story’s beats and chuckle when you meet the Pegs, Tommy Waddles and UHaul Pyles instead of the Peggottys, Tommy Traddles and Uriah Heep, but the story certainly stands on its own.
